NEW HOURS, NEW SUMMER PROGRAMMING, NEW EXHIBIT!
NEW HOURS, NEW SUMMER PROGRAMMING, NEW EXHIBIT!

On June 2, CMH is also changing its hours to serve families better! That means being able to spend time with mom or dad at CMH after their work, or having more play time at CMH after school!

“A lot of parents don't get a chance to spend time with their kids during the day because when they get off work, most places where kids can go to close early,” said Karen Milnar, director of gallery programs. “Now, they'll be able to hang out and have fun with their kids after work for about an hour or two.”

CMH's NEW HOURS will be Monday to Saturday: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and EXTENDED SUNDAYS: Noon – 6 p.m. Thursday FREE Family Nights will remain the same from 5 to 8 p.m.

Summer programming has also been kicked up a notch to provide a playground where brilliant minds can find an outlet for their creativity:

Inventors' Workshop
It's the Journey. Not the Destination.

The Inventors' Workshop's invigorating activities entail kids to go beyond their imagination to create extraordinary objects that may or may not even work! The purpose is to allow them to explore and create without instructions or inhibitions. They work together in a classroom-type setting, but without the same rules applied in schools—children won't be pressured to “get it right” because in the Inventors' Workshop, there are no definite answers! Kids will explore the concept of trial and error and possibly acquire that the best lessons in life are the ones learned through failure! They can use electric motors to build drawing devices and rollercoaster models, catapult ping-pong balls, develop their own musical instrument, or even create burglar alarms! Activities vary throughout the week. Check the “Calendar of Events” at cmhouston.org.

Pirates and Buccaneers, July 12 & 13
Pirates Ahoy!: Live Action Pirate Shows

Avast, me hearties! Got pirattitude? Batten down the hatches because pirates have taken a hold of CMH in search of treasures untold. Join their high sea adventure as they scavenge around the museum during our Treasure Hunt. Heave ho and don't hornswaggle until the ”X” marks the spot. Then, stir up a tempest strong enough to sink a ship. View an action-packed pirate show in which several members of the audience get to participate! Handsomely now, men! Hang 'em from the yardarm!

July 12 showtimes: 11 a.m., noon, 2, 3, & 4 p.m.

July 13 showtimes: 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5 p.m.

MindFest™, July 14 – 23
A Playground for your Mind™

Technology and creativity are at the heart of invention. That happens to be the idea behind our MindFest™ celebration. The festival was developed years ago by the MIT Media Lab in Massachusetts. It commemorates the vision that flourishes with each new technology and celebrates the result of an invention. Kids get to implement their knowledge and imagination in a variety of hands-on activities, which challenge them to redesign and take objects to a whole new level. The goal is for kids to achieve a full-proof result through fresh, never-attempted means. Senses will be stimulated with a blowout of experiments and explorations! Kids will go wild as they create new hues in Clingy Colors, paint pictures through the use of a digital camera in Light Painting, or turn into rocket scientists as they create motorized contraptions from simple materials in Mark Making Machines. It's all about endless possibilities where mind power is the only thing that matters!

The Great Create WonderWeek, July 31 – August 6
Mind Over Matter

It's a tough act to follow for many inventors today. You've got Da Vinci, Franklin and Edison among the greats, but it's a little bit different now. Today's inventors aren't the one-man-bands they used to be. They need a few helping hands to come up with their inventions! Celebrate National Inventor's Month this August by getting together with family and friends and coming up with designs that will lessen the work for people (or perhaps create more!). Unleash your creativity through the use of simple household items to make up anything you want. Explore how materials matter as you try to create a sail car. And, find out how putting together shapes and colors define your own made-from-scratch creation!

New exhibit! FlowWorks debuts August 28
Harnessing the Power of Water

The first of six new permanent exhibits in CMH's expanded new building will be unveiled in the bigger and better Allen Family Courtyard! This much anticipated action-packed exhibit dives into the forces and properties of water through waves, vortices and rapids, exploring the concept of hydropower, which accounts for 83 percent of renewable energy capacity in the United States.

Families will have the opportunity to act as engineers and plumbers, inspecting, operating and maintaining various parts. The five activity zones will enhance the key message that water's energy can be stored, released and manipulated. Children will experience and understand that not only does harnessed water produce energy, but that water in its natural state is a source of potential kinetic energy.
